On July 1, 1964, the Indonesian government established PT Biro Klasifikasi Indonesia (Persero) as a state corporation (PN), and the company status transformed to limited company in 1977.

In 2021, the Indonesian government established PT Biro Klasifikasi Indonesia (Persero) as the holding corporation for BUMN survey services, whose members include Sucofindo and Surveyor Indonesia. In December 2021, the company announced "IDSurvey" as the holding's identity

PT Biro Klasifikasi Indonesia (Persero) has become the fourth Asian classification agency after Japan, China, and Korea, and the only national classification agency in charge of classifying Indonesian and foreign flagged commercial vessels that regularly operate in Indonesian waters. The objective of the classification performed by PT Biro Klasifikasi Indonesia (Persero) is to classify ships based on the construction of the ship's vessel, engine, and electrical system in order to provide a technical evaluation of the ship's navigability.
