On June 26, 2023, the maritime world marked an important milestone by fulfilling the requirements for the implementation of The Hong Kong International Convention for the Safe and Environmentally Sound Recycling of Ships (IMO Hong Kong Convention). According to IMO provisions, 24 months from that date, namely on June 26, 2025, this convention will officially apply internationally. This convention aims to ensure that the ship disposal process is carried out with the principle of prioritizing worker safety, environmental protection, and better management of hazardous waste. To create a safe, sustainable, and environmentally friendly ship disposal process, the IMO Hong Kong Convention requires a certified Hazardous Material Inventory on board the ship while in operation for ships over 500 GT sailing internationally. At the national level, the government has anticipated this through the Regulation of the Minister of Transportation No. 29 of 2014, which was updated with PM No. 24 of 2022 concerning Prevention of Maritime Environmental Pollution”.
He also emphasized that compliance with the IMO Hong Kong Convention will strengthen Indonesia’s position in the Tokyo MoU White List, enhancing the international reputation of the national shipping sector. “Not only that, the ship closure process that meets standards can also support Indonesia’s greenhouse gas (GHG) emission reduction target. This is in line with the national commitment in the Paris Agreement and the IMO GHG Strategy 2050, which aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from the international shipping sector by 50% by 2050,” said Miftakhul Hadi.
BKI as the only national classification body plays an important role in supporting safety, environmentally friendly transitions and sustainability, as well as carrying out the government’s mandate to disseminate the latest Guidelines and Services related to ship closures.
